Peter Detmold Dog Run is a fenced off-leash space beside FDR Drive in Manhattan, below the East 51st Street pedestrian bridge. It offers a neighborhood stop for dogs near Turtle Bay and Beekman Place, with the river nearby and traffic noise that some visitors find noticeable.

- Arrival address: 455 E. 51st Street, New York, NY 10022. NYC Parks places the dog run west of FDR Drive between East 49th and East 51st streets.
- Off-leash access: Inside the designated dog run during park hours. Keep your dog leashed on the approach and elsewhere in the park.
- Hours: Check the entrance signs before visiting. A current park-specific schedule was not confirmed on the official pages reviewed.
- Documents: Carry proof of current dog licensing and rabies vaccination.
- Bring: Drinking water, a bowl, waste bags and a leash. Do not depend on a working fountain or spare bags.
Find the dog park entrance
Get directions to Peter Detmold Dog Run. Look for the dog enclosure near the footbridge at the East 51st Street end of the park. NYC Parks’ official dog-area listing identifies the run on the west side of FDR Drive.
The East 51st Street approach includes steps described in the city’s community plan. A step-free route to the dog-run gate has not been confirmed. If stairs affect your visit, check access with NYC Parks through 311 before traveling. A dedicated parking lot is not confirmed; read street-parking signs rather than expecting a lot at the gate.
Space, shade and what to check
The 2023 photograph shows a paved enclosure, benches and trees beneath and beside the footbridge. Check the ground and fencing on arrival. A separate small-dog area, agility equipment and reliable drinking-water provision are not confirmed by the official facility listing.
This is a dog run beside a roadway, not a swimming destination. Keep your dog within the enclosure and use the gate carefully. The surrounding park’s walkways and river views do not extend the off-leash boundary.
Rules before you enter
NYC Parks’ dog rules require a leash no longer than six feet outside dog runs or specifically designated off-leash areas. Carry licensing and vaccination proof, pick up waste and prevent your dog from chasing wildlife. Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds, fountains or other prohibited facilities.
Check signs for additional rules and closures. The reviewed official pages do not state a separate admission fee or dog-run pass; that does not replace the city’s dog-licensing requirements.
What parkgoers say
A July 2026 visitor praised the little park and its separate dog run but found the nearby highway loud. Another visitor, writing in March 2025, enjoyed the river and Queens skyline from the bridge and encountered only a few dogs during an afternoon visit.
Those experiences suggest both the appeal of the setting and its main tradeoff: traffic is close. Crowds and noise vary. Read current parkgoer reviews on Google Maps before choosing a visit time.
