Andrew Haswell Green Park Dog Run is a fenced off-leash area on Manhattan’s East River waterfront near East 63rd Street. The run is also commonly called the East River Esplanade Dog Run. Its gravel surface, river views and separate play spaces make it a practical neighborhood stop, while the surrounding esplanade remains an on-leash public park.
Plan your visit
- Official location: East River at East 63rd Street in Andrew Haswell Green Park, New York, NY 10022.
- Hours: NYC Parks says fenced dog runs may be used off leash during park hours. Check the gate and current park notices because the city page does not publish a separate fixed schedule for this run.
- Play areas: Visitors describe separate spaces for smaller and larger dogs. Follow the signs on each gate because section use can change.
- Surface: Fine gravel and compacted areas. Bring a towel after rain and check paws after active play.
- Water: Visitors report dog-water stations and splash tubs, but service may be seasonal or interrupted. Carry backup drinking water.
- Parking: This waterfront run is best reached on foot or by transit. Do not plan on a dedicated dog-run parking lot.
Find the dog park entrance
Use the East 63rd Street pedestrian connection to reach the waterfront and follow the esplanade signs into Andrew Haswell Green Park. NYC Parks places the dog run at the East River and East 63rd Street. The park’s newer esplanade connection also provides ramp access from East 60th Street, but approaching from 63rd Street is the clearest route to the run.
Get directions to the dog run, then use posted signs to find the correct gate.
A waterfront gravel run
The fenced space sits beside the East River with benches and mature trees along parts of the boundary. The existing park photo shows two dogs in the gravel run, perimeter fencing, benches and waterfront views. Shade shifts during the day, so summer visitors should bring water and avoid relying on every seat being shaded.
Separate areas and water
Park goers consistently mention a smaller-dog section and a larger shared section, along with water points and tubs during warmer weather. NYC Parks confirms the fenced dog run but does not list those amenities individually on its facility page. Check the gate signs and fountain before settling in, and keep dogs out of the East River and ornamental park fountains.
Rules before entering
NYC Parks requires dogs in public to have a current license and rabies vaccination. Keep your dog on a leash no longer than six feet outside the dog run, carry proof of licensing and vaccination, pick up waste and prevent chasing wildlife. Off-leash play belongs inside the fenced run; dogs are not permitted in playgrounds, ball fields, courts, swimming facilities or fountains.
What park visitors say
Park goers often praise the East River view, roomy feel, separate small-dog space and friendly neighborhood crowd. Reviews also mention dusty or uneven gravel, limited shade in some areas and occasional water interruptions. These are individual experiences rather than guarantees, so check the surface, water and dogs already inside when you arrive.
