Jackson Bark is the community dog park at 6000 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago’s Jackson Park. It became known for play structures built into former tennis courts. The photograph on this page is from 2017 and does not show current conditions.
Plan your visit
- Address: 6000 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60637.
- Hours: the park’s FAQ lists 6 a.m.–11 p.m., but its Google listing shows a 9 p.m. closing time. Neither resolves the recent locked-gate report. Confirm access before leaving.
- Entry and permits: the park’s FAQ says entry is free and asks visitors to have a Chicago DFA permit and tag. The Park District lists a $10 permit-and-tag cost per dog through participating veterinarians; ask the vet about any separate visit charges.
- Bring: a leash, waste bags, drinking water and a bowl. Do not rely on working water fixtures or usable play equipment.
Find the dog park entrance
Use the named Jackson Bark directions pin, rather than a general Jackson Park destination. Look for the fenced former tennis-court area and Jackson Bark signs. Keep your dog leashed while checking the entrance, and do not enter if the gates are locked or access is restricted.
The park’s FAQ links to parking it describes as free, while a visitor reported paying to park in 2025. Check the signs and payment terms for the space you actually use; do not assume nearby parking is free.
Play areas and current conditions
The park website shows climbing structures, jumps, water play and places to sit. Those pictures describe what the park has offered, not what is working today. Recent reports of damaged equipment make an on-arrival check especially necessary. Avoid unstable structures, exposed hardware and damaged fencing.
Working drinking water, pools, lighting and separate spaces for small dogs have not been confirmed for a current visit. This listing does not establish access to a dog-swimming beach or lake area.
Rules before you enter
Jackson Bark’s FAQ directs visitors to the Chicago Park District’s DFA rules and permit information. These require handlers to stay with their dogs, keep gates closed, remove waste and carry each dog’s permit. Leash your dog before entering and after leaving; human and dog food are not allowed inside.
The rules allow no more than three dogs per person and exclude puppies under four months and female dogs in heat. Read the full health requirements and follow any notices at the entrance. A permit does not override a closure or locked gate.
What parkgoers say
Some visitors remember a spacious, inventive place for dogs to play. A December 2025 visitor appreciated the room for a large dog, and a former regular recalled the volunteer work behind the obstacles.
More recent comments raise concerns about upkeep. A May 2026 visitor described broken equipment; in July, another reported weeds and locked gates. Earlier visitors also warned that older photos did not match the condition they found. Read current visitor reviews on Google Maps before deciding to travel.
