Find the dog park entrance
Get directions to Tompkins Square Dog Run. NYC Parks places the dog-run entrance area at East 9th Street and Avenue B. Once inside the park, look for the fenced dog enclosures and read the signs before choosing a gate.
No dedicated dog-run parking lot is confirmed. If arriving by car, allow time to check nearby street-parking restrictions. Keep your dog leashed between your arrival point and the enclosure.
Play areas, water and upcoming work
The dog-run community website describes separate large- and small-dog areas, a granite-sand running surface, pools and rinse hoses. Its 2019 renovation account records artificial turf installed in the small-dog run. These accounts describe improvements at different times; check the actual surface and available water on arrival.
NYC Parks also lists a dog-run synthetic-turf project. At our August 30, 2026 check, the tracker showed design at 90%, procurement and construction at 0%, and no construction start date. That does not establish a current closure or a finished new surface. Check project updates and gate notices before making a special trip.
Bring backup drinking water even if bowls or hoses are available. The wider park’s swimming pool, spray showers and playgrounds are separate facilities, not extra dog-play space.
Rules before you enter
The community’s posted dog-run rules limit the small enclosure to dogs 25 pounds and under. Dogs older than six months must be spayed or neutered. Stay with your dog, interrupt rough play, remove an aggressive dog and collect waste. Food and toys other than standard tennis balls are prohibited. Dogs must wear a collar or harness, but prong, chain and spike collars are not allowed. Children need an accompanying adult and must remain seated.
NYC Parks rules require licensing and rabies-vaccination proof, a leash no longer than six feet outside permitted off-leash spaces, and keeping dogs away from wildlife and prohibited facilities. No separate admission charge is stated on the reviewed official pages; dog-licensing requirements still apply. Follow current signs if additional restrictions are posted.

An April 2026 visitor appreciated the clearly marked 25-pound limit in the small-dog area. An April 2025 reviewer praised the separate sections, benches, drinking-water bowl and attentive owners. Another visitor in January 2026 liked the run but noticed odor during dry weather.
