Open directions to University Village Dog Park. Keep your dog leashed on the sidewalk and through the entry area until both of you are safely inside the off-leash enclosure.
Hard surface, water and shade
The existing exact-park photo shows a fenced hard-surface run with a dog at play, mature trees and shade along part of the perimeter. The simple layout suits short neighborhood visits, although the pavement leaves less soft ground than dogs find at turf or gravel parks.
Sun-exposed pavement can become unsafe for paws on warm days. Test the surface with your hand, use the shadier edge when available and choose a cooler time when the ground is hot. Bring your own bowl and water even though a fountain is reported.
What park goers say
Park goers describe a basic neighborhood run where dogs can stretch their legs and meet other local dogs. Some visitors recommend the evening for a more social play group, while others simply call it a convenient place for a quick off-leash break.
The most repeated criticism is the hard pavement with very little shade, especially when the ground heats up. Crowd size and play style change throughout the day, so pause at the gate and make sure the current group is a good fit for your dog. Rules before you enter
Chicago allows off-leash play only in designated areas. Follow the gate signage, keep your dog leashed before entering and after leaving, close both gates, stay with your dog and remove waste immediately.
Chicago Park District Dog Friendly Areas require a current permit and tag for each dog, limit handlers to three dogs and prohibit food inside the enclosure. University Village does not appear in the Park District’s current online facility list, so confirm the site’s present designation and requirements from the posted sign before using it off leash.
