Montrose Dog Beach gives dogs off-leash sand and lake access at the north end of Montrose Beach in Chicago. Head for the designated dog-area entrance near Wilson Drive, rather than the main swimming beach. The shoreline boundary is not fully enclosed, so this is a place to stay close to your dog.

Plan your visit
- Facility address: 601 West Montrose Avenue, Chicago, IL 60613, as listed by the Chicago Park District.
- Dog area: 3.83 acres at the north end of Montrose Beach. Off-leash access applies within the designated DFA only.
- Hours: Montrose Dog Owners Group (MonDog) lists 6 a.m.–11 p.m. daily, year-round. Follow temporary entrance notices.
- Permit: Each dog needs a current Chicago DFA permit and tag, including visiting dogs. The Park District lists a $10 fee; ask a participating veterinarian about records and any appointment charges.
- Bring: Drinking water, a bowl, waste bags, a leash and a towel. Lake access does not replace drinking water.
Find the dog park entrance
Get directions to Montrose Dog Friendly Area and follow signs to the dog-beach ramp. The named dog-area destination is more useful than routing to the general Montrose Beach address.
The Park District visitor page lists paid lots and street parking. MonDog describes a small paid lot at the entrance ramp that fills during busy periods. Read current parking signs and payment instructions; a space is not guaranteed.
Sand, water and the shoreline boundary
MonDog describes fencing on three sides, with Lake Michigan forming the fourth. Storms, shifting sand and lake levels can leave gaps between fences and the water. Check the boundary before releasing your dog and keep watching throughout the visit.
Dogs are not permitted on the general public beach or in the adjacent Montrose Beach Dunes Natural Area. Respect wildlife fencing and posted restrictions.
Check current beach advisories before water play. Human swimming follows the Park District’s designated-area and lifeguard restrictions; the dog beach’s opening hours are not a human-swimming schedule. A separate small-dog enclosure and currently working rinse equipment are not confirmed by the official sources linked here. Bring your own supplies rather than relying on them.
Rules before you enter
Review the Park District DFA rules and permit requirements. Keep dogs leashed before entering and after leaving, close gates, supervise continuously and clean up waste. Food is not allowed inside the DFA. Dogs that show dangerous behavior are prohibited.
The limit is three dogs per person. Puppies under four months and female dogs in heat are not allowed. Children under 12 need an accompanying adult, with close supervision for younger children.
What parkgoers say
Recent visitors describe dogs enjoying the water and social play, and one praises the friendly people and happy dogs. Seating and containment draw criticism: a visitor wanted more benches and reported that their dog could get around the fence through the water. Another described a frightening encounter with a reactive dog.
One visitor found parking easier near the dog beach, but MonDog warns that busy weekends can be difficult. Conditions and company change between visits. Read recent parkgoer reviews on Google Maps, check the enclosure on arrival and leave if play becomes uncomfortable.
