Horner Park Dog Park is a large, fenced off-leash area in the southwest corner of Horner Park near Irving Park Road and California Avenue. The volunteer advisory council describes 25,000 square feet of play space with separate small- and large-dog areas, a water-play feature, a drinking fountain, benches and natural landscaping.

- Hours: The committee currently reports the dog park open with regular Horner Park hours of 6 a.m.-11 p.m. The enclosure is not lit, so daylight visits are recommended.
- Dog areas: Separate fenced sections. The small-dog area is intended for dogs under 30 pounds; smaller dogs may also use the larger section.
- Surface: Woodchips and landscaped areas with paved entry sections. Expect softer footing but check for mud or displaced mulch after rain.
- Water: A drinking fountain and water-play area are installed. Bring backup water because seasonal shutdowns or maintenance can affect operation.
- Parking: No dedicated dog-run lot was confirmed. Read nearby street restrictions and event notices before leaving your car.
Find the dog park entrance
The Park District address points to the much larger Horner Park. For the dog run, approach the southwest corner near West Irving Park Road and North California Avenue. Look for the fenced enclosure just north of Irving Park Road, rather than heading toward the Montrose Avenue fieldhouse or the riverfront natural area.

Separate areas, woodchips and water play
The advisory council confirms a small-dog enclosure, water-play area, drinking fountain, benches and natural landscaping. The current listing photo shows woodchips, mature shade, perimeter fencing and bench seating inside the larger section.
The enclosure is not lit. Woodchips cushion the surface, but visitors report muddy patches after rain. Inspect your dog’s paws, watch for displaced mulch around gates and water features, and bring a towel when the water area is operating.
What park goers say
Park goers value the generous space, mature trees, separate small-dog section, shaded seating and summer water play. Visitors often describe a friendly neighborhood crowd and appreciate having more room than many compact city dog runs.
Other visitors mention mud after rain, limited visibility after sunset and occasional size mixing between the two sections. Use the section that fits your dog, assess the current group before entering and visit during daylight when possible. These are visitor experiences rather than a check of today’s conditions.
Rules before you enter
Chicago Park District rules require owners to remain with and watch their dogs, keep gates closed, clean up waste and leash dogs before entering and after leaving. Food for people or dogs is prohibited inside Dog Friendly Areas.
Each adult may bring no more than three dogs. Puppies under four months, female dogs in heat and dogs with known dangerous behavior are prohibited. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Every dog needs the required Dog Friendly Area permit and current registration tag; visitor day passes are not available.
