Ocean Beach Dog Beach is San Diego’s designated 24-hour off-leash beach at the west end of Voltaire Street. The sandy dog-run area sits between the Pacific Ocean, Mission Bay Channel and the San Diego River Floodway. It is open shoreline rather than a fenced dog park, so keep your dog in sight and stay within the signed Dog Beach boundary.
Plan your visit

- Hours: The City of San Diego lists 24-hour dog access.

Find the Dog Beach entrance
Use the named Dog Beach destination and approach from the west end of Voltaire Street. A public lot serves the beach, with additional Ocean Beach lots and street parking nearby. Parking close to the sand can fill during popular times, so an early or off-peak arrival may reduce the search.

Sand, surf and an open boundary
Dogs can run on the sand and enter the water, but this is not an enclosed run. Waves, currents, the river channel and rock jetties add risks that do not exist at a fenced inland park. Stay close enough to interrupt play, use a leash if recall is unreliable, and do not assume that a dog comfortable in calm water can handle ocean surf.
The off-leash exception applies only inside the designated Dog Beach area. Standard dog rules are enforced on the rest of Ocean Beach. Leash your dog before leaving the zone and follow all posted lifeguard directions.
Check water quality before swimming
Dog Beach meets the San Diego River at the ocean, so water quality can change after rain or when runoff reaches the coast. Check the County of San Diego beach water-quality status on the day of your visit and obey any advisory, warning or closure signs. County guidance advises avoiding ocean and bay water for 72 hours after significant rain and staying away from runoff near river, creek and storm-drain outlets.
Bring fresh drinking water and discourage dogs from drinking salt water or runoff. Rinse and dry your dog after water play, especially if skin is sensitive.
Facilities and beach rules
The City’s Ocean Beach page lists parking, restrooms and showers for the wider beach. Availability and proximity can vary, so do not depend on a particular space or facility without checking on arrival. The beach prohibits alcohol, glass containers, smoking, littering and camping.
Owners accept responsibility for their dogs, must maintain control and must remove waste. Keep a leash ready for the parking lot and any area outside Dog Beach. Read current boundary signs before releasing your dog.
What parkgoers say
Visitors often praise the broad sandy play area, easy water access, sunsets and the sight of dogs running and swimming together. Many also appreciate the nearby lot, bathrooms and showers.
Busy periods can bring tight parking, dense groups of dogs and uneven owner attention. Reviews mention missed waste and occasional rough play, while water-quality warnings are a recurring concern. Scan the beach before releasing your dog, choose a quieter stretch when needed and leave if the surf, crowd or play style does not suit your dog.
